Golden Palace is renowned for its distinctive performing style: a fascinating mix of physical acting, singing and live music.
Performances of Golden Palace are devised through improvisation and deal with the tragi-comic human struggle to fit into society. Despite their clumsiness, the characters in Golden Palace productions are basically trying to do the right thing.
The theatre of Golden Palace is lightly surreal: the ‘daily experience’ can subtly shift into the realms of a magical reality. Absurd, hilarious and heartbreaking are words used by reviewers to describe the work of Golden Palace. NRC Handelsblad, a Dutch newspaper, referred to Golden Palace as ‘total theatre that cannot fail to move you’.
International:
The physical nature of Golden Palace productions makes them highly suitable for theatres outside the Netherlands. Due to the large casts of eight to twelve actors, few have been exported.
As from 2009 Golden Palace is investing into touring abroad. Two productions will be part of the international repertoire: de Buikspreekster/the Ventriloquist and Balieleed/Sorrow at the Counter.
The Golden Palace classic The Ventriloquist revolves around a mother trying to prevent her son from growing up and was awarded the VSCD Mime prize in 2001. The highly acclaimed production Sorrow at the Counter played to full houses during the 2009 tour and deals with human behavior at municipality counters. Creating roars of laughter and tears of emotion at the same time, Sorrow at the Counter is a universal tale about our struggle to control the chaos.
