Theatergroep Siberia is a new youth theatre company in Rotterdam. In 2009 Het Waterhuis merged with two other youth theatre companies in Rotterdam: Rotterdams Lef and Rotjong. Theatergroep Siberia makes professional theatre productions for all ages and in every possible location. From playhouse to classroom, from South Africa to Rotterdam.
Theatergroep Siberia wants to tell the stories of young people living in the big cities. In order to develop new repertoire Theatergroep Siberia casts young actors and writers next to the more experienced. Also, Theatergroep Siberia works together with children and youth in projects at their schools and on the streets. They create stories that are raw, that are real and beautiful. The stories of our time.
These stories of Theatergroep Siberia aren’t limited to Rotterdam. Children are facing the same challenges all over the world – migration, globalisation, religious tensions, poverty. Theatergroep Siberia will continue the international activities that Het Waterhuis has been developing since 1995. The aim is to bring Dutch children and youth into contact with peers from other parts of the world, as well as to swap experiences amongst local actors, writers and directors and professional theatre companies.
In 2009 Theatergroep Siberia will start a four-year project in South-Africa called Twist, working together with the South African theatre company Eager Artists, three local theatre schools in Kwa Zulu Natal and the prestigious Playhouse Theatre in Durban. The central focus of the project is the theatre play Twist, which will be created and performed in South Africa before being brought back to the Netherlands and Belgium in December 2010.
In 2010 another four-year project will start in Morocco. In Dossier Odyssee Theatergroep Siberia will connect the mythic tale of Odysseus to the harsh reality of thousands of North African refugees who illegally try to cross the Mediterranean Sea to reach the European coast. Dossier Odyssee will be a co-production between Theatergroep Siberia, the Rabat theatre school and the Complexe Culturel Moulay Rachid in Casablanca.
