Street culture in theatre
None/English
ISH creates dynamic and spectacular theatre in disciplines such as street dance, skating, break dance, beatbox and martial arts. The main priority for ISH is to make a place for theatre into the minds of youngsters from diverse social backgrounds.
ISH was founded in 1999 by Marco Gerris, then one of the youngest theatrical producers in the Netherlands. Initially, the idea was to create a show integrating disciplines from the street and club circuit including: acrobatic stunts and dance on in-line skates, break dance, DJ performance, martial arts, acrobatics, rap, beatbox and even bungee jumping. These disciplines, combined with the elements of pop concerts, video clips and video games were the foundation of ISH and a new brand of entertainment.
ISH’ urban street culture can be found everywhere in the world. That is why the company focuses on visiting several countries each year and ISH has already toured in all parts of the globe to stay in touch with its fans. The international show 4-ISH, for example, was performed in the US, Canada, China, Japan, Brazil and a number of European countries.
ISH’ ‘residencies’ range from workshops to complete school projects in which pupils are supervised and guided in staging their own shows. The projects can come in a variety of forms; they can last a day or a week, the project can be held within or outside the school, they can contain disciplines like street dance, DJ-techniques, skate dance, theatre expression, break dance, martial arts, rap, acrobatics and juggling, but ISH also encourages students to integrate their own choice of disciplines. The show will be performed to the public on the last day of the residency. The objective of the residency is to give youth the opportunity to work with international artists and learn new skills in several different areas of stage production.
