Dood Paard’s work is created without any external authority determining the worldview, the acting style or the stage design of a production; each and every decision emerges from discussions between equals – the actors and the technicians. Each performance is an explicit attempt on the part of the actors to relate to the world in the here and now.

Every action taken and line spoken is directed at sharpening the actor-maker’s mind, and by extension, the spectator’s. Whether it is a play by Shakespeare, a script by Rob de Graaf or a ‘self-assembled’ text, the questions posed remain the same: What do we know? What is our situation? And what do we think?

The members of Dood Paard believe that a critical stance toward the world at large is the precondition for theatre making. This is complemented, however, by a tireless and infectious sense of optimism about the mental resourcefulness of the individual, whose intellect and creativity can transcend any tragedy.

International:

Dood Paard has been touring Europe with its productions since 1995. medEia by Oscar van Woensel, 40,000 Sublime and Beautiful Thoughts based on Peter Handke, Titus based on William Shakespeare and Answer Me by Gerardjan Rijnders, have all been staged in various European countries. Dood Paard has also toured outside Europe and has performed in several cities in the United States and

at the Melbourne Arts Festival in Australia. In 2011 Dood Paard performed Reigen ad lib (Hands Around) by Arthur Schnitzler at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. In the same year they made The Jew (after The Jew of Malta) together with the Portuguese theatre group Mundo Perfeito. And Freetown by Rob de Graaf has and will be performed in Germany with German surtitles.

The international repertoire comprises: Titus, medEia, Answer Me, Basel, Reigen ad lib, Freetown, The Jew and Bye Bye/Othello.
