The Orkater music theatre company primarily makes specially written and composed music theatre. The freedom with which productions are conceived, made and presented is paramount to Orkater and the venue can vary from studio to municipal theatre and from museum to summer festival.
Orkater does not work with a fixed group of actors and musicians but offers them and directors, composers and text writers a place where they can shape their ideas. Orkater/De Nieuwkomers is an initiative that gives young professional theatre makers an opportunity to create their own music theatre productions within Orkater.
International:
Orkater also presents productions internationally, preferably in the language of the host country and three productions are currently available for touring internationally:
Richard III - Orkater and the Amsterdam Stadsschouwburg have together created a music theatre production from the Shakespearen play with music by Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan.
Vanaf nu heet je Pjotr/From now on your name is Pjotr - a universal story about the usually invisible women in time of war, with a poetic text and beautiful music played by one of the best string quartets in the Netherlands. From now on your name is Pjotr has been performed in a forest, in an old boat shed and in several theatres. It is a flexible production suitable for many different locations.
Alabama Chrome - a play that takes the audience to the southern states of the US with live music (from Rock to laid-back Blues and Country), extreme physical acting and now and then a heart-rending silence. It has been performed at many music and theatre festivals and theatres and was selected in 2009 for Blind Date, an initiative touring new theatre makers, and where it won the audience’s award for best production.
