Toneelgroep Amsterdam is based in the Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam and it is Holland's principle, and the city’s official, theatre company. It is also the Netherlands’ largest repertory company. It maintrains a prominent place in the Dutch capital’s cultural scene and it presents contemporary theatre of an international standard. With an annual average of 20 plays and a total of over 350 performances, the company entertains audiences of 100,000 a year.

International: 

The influence of Toneelgroep Amsterdam’s kaleidoscope of ideas and activities can be found among theatres and theatre makers all over the world. The company works with international guest directors such as Robert Woodruff, Krzysztof Warlikowski, Christoph Marthaler, Wim Vandekeybus, Grzegorz Jarzyna, Johan Simons, Thomas Ostermeier, Luk Perceval and Dimiter Gotscheff and operates internationally with organisations such as the Holland festival, NTGent, the Wiener Festwochen, the RuhrTriennale, Festival d’Avignon, the Brooklyn Academy of Music and the Lincoln Centre Festival New York. Toneelgroep Amsterdam gives more than 90 performances a year throughout Europe, the US, Canada and Australia.

Award-winning productions in the current repertoire include the Roman Tragedies from Shakespeare as well as The Taming of the Shrew, Tony Kushner's Angels in America, Ingmar Bergman's Scenes from a Marriage, Jean Cocteau’s La Voix Humaine, John Cassavetes Opening Night and Gorki’s Children of the Sun.

Husbands, directed by artistic director Ivo van Hove and based on John Cassavetes’ film, has been selected for the prestigious Prospero Project 2012. The production will be shown exclusively in the Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam and six major European theatres in Lisbon, Berlin, Rennes, Liège, Modena and Tampere. The company will also be performing Shakespeare’s Macbeth (directed by Johan Simons) and Molière’s Tartuffe (directed by Dimiter Gotscheff). Nobel Prize winner J.M. Coetzee’s Disgrace is directed by Luk Perceval and will be performed in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and France.
