Beyond traditional models
English
Disjointed Arts productions, artistically led by Bruno Listopad, attempts to examine what performance is and what performance can produce beyond traditional dramatic models. The body of the performer is not used as a vehicle of concepts, but as an arena within which concepts are generated by means of an encounter between diverse artistic collaborators - together they produce a conceptual multiplicity which is immanent in the creative process. These projects are in part self-referential explorations in which the subject matter addressed cannot be disassociated from the objective registration of the creative process. Projects question the ontology of dance, choreographic necessity and the relationship between ethics and aesthetics.
Listopad attempts to explore the limits of representation by experimenting with the boundaries of speech and narrative and by blurring of the distinctions between reality and fiction. He explores the aesthetics of high and popular culture, kitsch, the grotesque and the concept of failure, thereby questioning the accepted notion that the role of the artist is to ‘communicate’ and that the artist should have a unique signature. To do this, he makes use of various means (movement, voice, text, recorded and live music) to better articulate concepts, to disrupt their comprehension and to exhaust modern dance’s notion of essentialism.
Bruno Listopad is a Portuguese choreographer, ‘performance maker’ and teacher. He was educated in Portugal, France and the Netherlands. In addition to his independent work, mostly produced by Korzo Producties and since 2000 the Disjointed Arts Foundation, he has been co-produced by several international production houses such as Dansateliers, Acarte (Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian), Danças na Cidade and Teatro Rivoli. His works have been commissioned by many festivals and companies, such as Holland Dance Festival, Ballet Gulbenkian, Dance Works Rotterdam, Tanz Ensemble Cathy Sharp, Nye Carte Blanche, Something Raw Festival and (PAE) Performance Art Event.
