Young and adventurous drama
Alongside the companies, the Netherlands also boasts other places where makers are supervised in their first steps on the national and international theatre market, and which provide room for experimentation. The role of these so-called production houses has become indispensable in the development of drama talent.

The Grand Theatre Groningen is one of the larger production houses in the Netherlands. It produces about twenty dance, theatre, new media and music productions a year.
As a producer, the Grand Theatre is intensively involved with theatre makers at the beginning of their careers; the production house guides them in their growth towards independence. A recent example is Club Guy & Roni. In recent years, there have also been international co-productions with Matanicola, The Nature Theatre of Oklahoma and Ea Sola. Keren Levi, Reneé Copraij, Pieter de Ruiter and Beppie Blankert are just some of the theatre makers established in the Netherlands who have worked at the Grand Theatre.
The Grand Theatre works in ‘splendid isolation’ in the Netherlands. This means that professional makers do not just start working at the Grand Theatre by chance. The nearest institutions of education for theatre and dance are at least 200 kilometres away, for instance. Theatre makers who nevertheless choose for the production house do so with good reason: to work in a relatively protected situation, to work in a professional but informal atmosphere - where you as theatre maker get the key to the front door - and, because of the combination of production house and venue, to work in a fertile meeting place.

Productiehuis Rotterdam is affiliated with the Rotterdamse Schouwburg, the city theatre of Rotterdam. Its artistic directors are Annemie Vanackere and Jan Zoet. Productiehuis Rotterdam focuses on producing interdisciplinary and international productions and offers space for researching and developing forms of theatre which are influenced by other art disciplines and forms of presentation. It is an environment where advanced theatre makers/creators can work and develop new forms of theatre in close collaboration with – and nourished by – other disciplines. Productiehuis Rotterdam can therefore be seen as a theatre laboratory, an open space for new, creative development within the interdisciplinary (international) theatre arena, and is the ‘research and development’ department of the Rotterdamse Schouwburg. Theatre makers explore and transcend borders and consolidate their practice, taking an interdisciplinary theme as their main focus.

Festival a/d Werf is a theatre, music and visual arts festival, which will be celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2010. Every year in May, the city of Utrecht is transformed into one enormous podium for ten days presenting exciting, new productions at surprising locations, indoors and in the open air.
As well as presenting Huis a/d Werf’s own productions from exceptional young theatre makers, the Festival also programmes work from all over the world as well as elsewhere in the Netherlands. The production-house and the festival are inseparable, but the production-house is increasingly becoming the heart of the organisation. Huis a/d Werf offers theatre makers a course of supervision and guidance in their artistic and business development for one to five years. At the end of that journey, the makers know their own style, their position in the field and the conditions under which they want to create/work. For a select group of makers there is an international course. Performances are co-produced internationally and makers find their way onto podia abroad. During the year, short presentations, productions, research work, etc. are presented in Huis a/d Werf. High point of the year is Festival a/d Werf and the productions that they develop especially for the festival.
