WArd/waRD has as much a Flemish as a Dutch identity, given that the unique choreographer Ann Van den Broek, heart of the company, works in both countries. WArd/waRD is the resident company of the Berchem cultural centre in Antwerp, Belgium, and has a structural, collaborative relationship with Korzo Producties in The Hague, the Netherlands. Artistic and international appreciation for her work has grown in recent years. For Co(te)lette, Van den Broek received the Zwaan [Swan] for the most impressive dance production of the season 2007/2008 and, more recently, she won the Mouson Award 2009/2010 – from the Künstlerhaus Mousonturm in Frankfurt – for both Co(te)lette and We Solo Men.

Her work is described as emotional minimalism. Her controlled and taut movements serve as a rational context for their inspiration, the uncontrollable human longing to spontaneously express inner motivations, feelings and frustrations. The intuitive or instinctive compulsion for a certain form of behaviour is rationalised choreographically. This conflict is tangible in the movement between diverse contradictions: close/distant, admit/shut out, control/release, give/refuse.

Ann Van den Broek penetrates the essence of the story or feeling that she wants to translate by means of simple forms of movement. Influenced by various styles and media, she creates her own mix of emotion and analysis. Raw, analytical, expressive, formal, filmic, temperamental, detailed, realistic: a personal product of today.

People gather around Ann Van den Broek who do not conform to convention but approach it critically.
