Edit Kaldor is recognised internationally as a unique voice in the contemporary theatre landscape. She combines conceptually strong forms rarely seen in theatre with a personal approach to existential themes. Her pieces convey the inner experience, the emotional and thought processes of often marginal or extremely isolated individuals in today’s fast-changing world.

Kaldor takes the basic situation of theatre seriously: the encounter between audience and performer(s), choosing protagonists who are simply not competent to meet the challenge of communication that the situation demands of them, be it because they are too shy, in a state of complete inertia, or because the only language they speak is Mandarin. Her pieces aim to show the beauty of the effort and perseverance of these people, as they attempt to overcome the obstacles. They are eager to seize the opportunity of communicating with the audience, seeing it as their perhaps only chance of making contact with the world, to formulate and tell their stories, to share their questions and doubts, to try to reinvent themselves.

Edit Kaldor mixes documentary and fictional elements in her work, and often integrates the use of various digital media in a straightforward, simple way.

International:

Her performances have been presented at theatres and festivals in nearly every country in Europe and have also been shown in North and South America and Asia.

Edit Kaldor’s work has been produced and co-produced by partners such as Productiehuis Rotterdam (Rotterdamse Schouwburg), Parc de la Villette Paris, P.S.122 New York and Kuenstlerhaus Mousonturm Frankfurt.

Her latest project C’est du chinois is produced by Productiehuis Rotterdam (Rotterdamse Schouwburg) and co-produced by alkantara festival Lisbon, Kunstenfestivaldesarts Brussels, Göteborgs Dans & Teater Festival, and steirischer herbst festival Graz. It is about a Chinese family who teach the audience basic Mandarin, just enough to be able to follow the unfolding account of their troubled personal situation.
