Joachim Robbrecht is a writer and director from Belgium working in the Netherlands and his work satirises our relationship with identity, history and globalisation. The complex interaction between fact and fiction that is intrinsic in the phenomenon of cultural identity is reflected in Robbrecht's experiments with the theatrical form and he continually combines documentary and fictional material, pretend and reality, new and familiar texts.
One piece is a historic epic arising from something that the Dutch prime minister recently said, the next is a sung commentary in Japanese on Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation, in another, two Polish seasonal workers analyse their identity in Dutch, Polish and French after Jean Genet’s The Maids.
Robbrecht’s work is characterised by a humorous and ironic relationship with post-modern theatre conventions and text, dance, music and image tumble over each other in ingenious combinations.
The up and coming director's work was awarded the Ton Lutzprijs in 2006 and the Charlotte Koehler Prijs in 2011.
International:
Robbrecht has won international attention with his latest productions. Rosto in Turansureishon, a satirical critique of Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation from the perspective of two Japanese tourists, was performed in Istanbul and Oh Polsko! Genet’s The Maids adapted for Polish seasonal workers, was made possible with the co-production of Frascati in Amsterdam and BRUT in Vienna.
Robbrecht is currently working with the German collective Andcompanyandco on Der (kommende) Aufstand nach Friedrich Schiller about the first European revolution.
