Developing both the head and the heart

Theatre company de Toneelmakerij is the Netherlands’ largest repertory company for children, young adults and adults. The starting point of all our productions is a young audience’s perspective: How would a child experience this? What does this mean for today's youth? Just like adults, children and young people have to deal with questions, dilemmas and ambivalent feelings. They too must learn to come to terms with the world in which they live. Newly written texts and compositions and an openness for new forms of theatre are fundamental for our work. Humour, musicality and the pleasure of acting are the building blocks. The result? Multi-disciplinary and socially engaged performances for theatres and schools, for young and old.

De Toneelmakerij sees art as essential for the development of both the head and the heart and audience education is therefore an integral part of our work. The projects and workshops the education department develops lend depth to productions. The department avoids explanations but builds bridges between the audience’s world of experience and the themes, questions and feelings a performance touches upon. Both performance and education enable a viewer to experience that art is for everyone and is valuable for everyone.
