Speeltheater Holland was founded in 1976 by Saskia Janse and Onny Huisink and developed into a touring theatre company with a core of ten permanent members. It creates productions mainly for children where artistic quality and the maintenance of a characteristic style are vital. Productions combine theatre and/or other theatrical disciplines with the use of puppets and different forms of puppetry and other theatrical techniques are employed. All productions share a strong visual sense, however.
Speeltheater Holland engages new actors, puppeteers and sometimes guest directors for each production and, depending on its nature, other experts such as composers, musicians, authors, choreographers, etcetera. Speeltheater Holland also nurtures young theatre and puppet theatre makers and is a place where new forms of collaboration and co-operation are experimented with.
Speeltheater Holland has received many awards including several in 2007 for their long and outstanding contribution to Dutch puppet and children’s theatre, the IPAY Victor Award in 2008 for Perô or The Mysteries of the Night and the Golden Cricket in 2011 for Adios, the co-production with Het Houten Huis.
Speeltheater Holland has worked closely with the Seattle Children’s theatre since 1997 which has resulted in many international productions like Stellaluna, Apple to Grandma and Nicky Somewhere Else. They have toured in the US, Austria, the UK, Belgium, Croatia, Bonaire, Germany and South Africa and they have also worked and co-produced in many other countries.
The two artistic directors will hand over the baton to the young group Het Houten Huis in 2013 who will take over their theatre in Edam. They will however continue as independent artists, directing, playwriting and designing and organising workshops and master classes to pass on their skills and experience to the next generation.
