Conny Janssen Danst, named after its artistic leader and located in Rotterdam, was established in 1992 and has since become one of the most prominent contemporary dance companies in the Netherlands. Her works are known for her dancer’s physical and theatrical power,and the surprising diversity in which outstanding dance is always paramount.
The city is a source of inspiration for Conny Janssen and she is a specialist in creating site-specific productions: from theatre to factory hall, from church to parking garage. By entering into alliances with artists and institutions from the worlds of photography, film, architecture, theatre and music, she also manages to place dance in a broader context. Conny Janssen’s works have been described as ingenious, powerful, and stirring. Her dance language cannot be regarded separately from the sophisticated choice of music, composition, and lighting and her works are consequently characterized by a versatility which is an unpredictable voyage of discovery for both dancers and audience alike. Her flexible, outstanding dance language smelts with the personal qualities of her dancers revealing her dancers as human beings of flesh and blood. Fragile, passionate, and militantly assertive.

Conny Janssen Danst has performed at many festivals and theatres in many countries across the world including Morocco, Russia, France, Canada, Hungary, Italy and Turkey.

Rebound, a study in confinement, power and social dynamics, was successfully presented in 2008 at the Jacob’s Pillow dance festival in the US: ‘Ms. Janssen’s musicality (which is never step-for-note) and her ability to evoke tiny narrative dramas through movement are both admirable. It would be good to see more of her work,’ New York Times.
