Noord Nederlandse Dans is a contemporary dance company based in Groningen, the Netherlands. It is the flagship dance company for the provinces in the north of the Netherlands and was established in 1997.

Noord Nederlandse Dans is known for its athleticism, musicality and virtuosity. This reputation has been maintained with Stephen Shropshire’s appointment as artistic director in 2009 and the physically thrilling programmes that engage the emotions and intellect. Shropshire’s work, along with work by a new generation of young, international choreographers, re-affirms the company's position as one of the most exciting and original contemporary dance companies working in the Netherlands today.

Noord Nederlandse Dans StudioGroup is a talented group of young dancers who rehearse and train with the dancers of the main company. They develop their own repertoire specifically for a younger audience and they are also responsible for carrying out educational projects. The artistic coordinator of the StudioGroup is Ronald Wintjens.

International: 

Noord Nederlandse Dans has become ever more prominent on the international stage over the last few years. The company has been a frequent guest at foreign festivals and venues in countries such as Brazil, Germany, Italy, Israel, Spain, Finland and Russia. It is Noord Nederlandse Dans’ aim to intensify and expand these international relations; it plans to invest in its image outside of the Netherlands to become a cultural ambassador for Groningen.

Artistic director Stephen Shropshire (Miami, 1972) trained at the Juilliard School, New York City under the direction of Benjamin Harkarvy. In 1992, while still a student, he created a number of works under the mentorship of Doris Rudko, Elizabeth Keen and Bessie Schonberg and after graduation, he joined the American Repertory Ballet. Between 1999 and 2005, he was a dancer with NND/Galili Dance and since 2005, he has created for several companies including Scapino Ballet Rotterdam and the Iceland Dance Company.
