As the most long-standing dance company in the Netherlands, Scapino Ballet Rotterdam is at the forefront of Holland’s internationally-renowned dance culture. Since its inception in 1945, Scapino has played a vital role in the development of modern dance. In 1992, the appointment of Ed Wubbe as artistic director brought a fresh vision to the company, and marked the beginning of a new chapter. With the prolific creative output of both Ed Wubbe and the many talented guest choreographers – some home-grown, some international – Scapino has become famous as a trend-setting company and breeding ground for contemporary dance. Thanks to this, and a penchant for entertainment, Scapino audiences come from all walks of life.
Artistic leader Ed Wubbe and resident choreographers Marco Goecke and Georg Reischl form the company’s choreographic heart. The arrival of these two talented young choreographers in 2005 has taken Scapino’s artistic achievements to new heights.
Ed Wubbe has won acclaim for an art of dance that is a virtuoso combination of classical technique and the bold freedom of contemporary dance. His expressive choreographies fuse theatrical finesse with feeling and his versatility and productivity are unequalled.
One of the present-day Scapino’s most important attributes is its much-lauded international group of dancers. The 22 Scapino dancers are celebrated for their accomplishment, technical prowess and passion. They come from all over the globe, from England to China and from Australia to Brazil. As well as playing Dutch venues, the group also performs at many international festivals and theatres.
For more than a decade, Wubbe has ranked among Europe’s finest choreographers. In the international dance world, Marco Goecke is one of the most celebrated choreographers of the moment. His choreographies are sensationally quirky and innovative. In an enigmatically dark setting, evocative and magical, he touches the soul of the audience with absurdist dance, the like of which has never been seen.
