Female Economy is attempting to inspire a new economic way of thinking by means of art on the assumption that everything in life is an illusion. Adelheid Roosen, artistic director of Female Economy, is fascinated by Arab culture and deeply interested in the lives of Islamic women and men in Western Europe. Her aim is to meet and be touched by the beauty of the stranger.

Female Economy produces international drama focusing on cultural issues, celebrating rather than ignoring the differences within society. Roosen weaves intimate portraits of migrant life and rituals drawn from personal accounts into probing monologues, embellishing them with, for example, dancing dervishes and music played on traditional instruments.

De Gesluierde Monologen/Veiled Monologues is a vigorous, startling and poetic portrait of intimacy, sensuality and love performed by a cast of four women from various Islamic backgrounds. It is hilarious, shocking and moving.

Is.Man unveils the secretive world and complex motives that underlie the tradition of honour killings in some Muslim societies.

International:

Diverse audiences in various locations including theatres, cultural centres, the Dutch Parliament, police headquarters and social services, have been deeply moved, enthused, embarrassed or appalled.

De Gesluierde Monologen/Veiled Monologues (2003) has been performed in various European cities, as well as in Turkey and the USA. English, Turkish and French translations are available as well as German subtitles. The text and the accompanying interview have been published in Theatre, the journal edited by the Yale School of Drama. The French version of the play, Les Monologues Voilés was performed for three months in Le Petit Théâtre in Paris and will be touring the rest of France in 2012.

Is.Man (2005) has been performed in the Netherlands, Belgium and New York and, in 2008, at festivals in Amman and Istanbul. English and Turkish translations are available.
